The thing that finally prompted me actually to close my Twitter account was seeing something on Bluesky that said that Elon Musk had changed the terms and conditions to require that any legal disputes would be settled in a court in Texas. Musk is based in Texas, so this could be simply for administrative convenience. But the suggestion was that the judge in Texas would be more sympathetic or easier to influence in favour of the billionaire.
I am, of course, small fry and realistically stood no chance of being noticed by Musk, let alone important enough to be sued by him.
But it just tipped me over the edge. I wasn’t actually that bothered by it becoming a toxic hell hole. That element of it was there from early on. It gave it a bit of edge. But it was also a great source of what the big news story of the day was. There were genuine experts sharing their expertise in an easy-to-follow format. And there were lots of funny people with entertaining and quirky things to say. These have become thinner on the ground. My 14 years of being a tweeter have now ended. I wonder what I’ll do with all the extra time?
