Twitter was fun while it lasted, and it lasted a long time. But nothing lasts forever, and especially in online media, nothing is in a vacuum. What happens outside a platform affects what goes on on a platform.
So, although I think I have been on Twitter at least briefly and often for much longer every day since I joined in 2008, I don’t mind that it has run its course. I am going to switch to Bluesky slowly.
The thing I am bitter about is a minor detail. In the last couple of months, and it seems with increasing intensity in the last few days, Twitter has become a massive mouthpiece for its billionaire owner. You can’t get away from him expressing opinions, promoting his businesses and bigging himself up. It is very much not what Twitter was all about. It’s effectively become another bit of the mainstream media pushing the establishment. I’d have hoped for a quirkier ending, more in keeping with its one-time character.
