Although I didn’t want Trump to win, and I can see a lot of downsides to him becoming president, I do feel elated by his victory. Harris put in a very respectable campaign. I would have been happy with her programme and I can accept that it was as good as was politically possible in America which is bad soil for progressive ideas.
But Trump and his followers were offering something radical and different. To my mind, it was radically horrible and different to what is needed right now. But there is an energy in ripping up the rule book. It can take us to places we haven’t been. Who knows where it might lead? Okay, there’s a good chance it will lead somewhere we’d rather not go. But not necessarily. It feels like the far right have been given a chance to show what they are made of. Let’s find out.
